Case Studies: Overchurch Junior School

About the client

Overchurch Junior School is a large, friendly and very popular community junior school in the heart of Upton. The school has more than 350 pupils in its four years and shares extensive school grounds with its sister school, Overchurch Infants. They strive to provide high standards of education with a first class team of staff who are dedicated to meeting the needs of individual pupils and working in partnership with parents.

What the client wanted

In the summer term of 2015, the Overchurch website was in desperate need of a overhaul, with virtually no information available to parents aside from where the school was and when it was open. It was also extremely difficult to navigate and many documents which Ofsted insists upon were missing.

The head wanted a whole new site which parents would be able to access for the majority of the information they needed without having to constantly go through the school office.

What we did

As a parent as well as a web designer, I had a very specific idea of what information a school website needed to have – in addition to the information Ofsted insists upon – and what parents would be looking for the most. I mocked up a website design using the images and some of the information on the existing site, which then formed the basis for the new site.

The site has a fun, user-friendly feel with child-friendly fonts, lots of pictures and lots of reasons to keep returning.

The school now uses the site as an online noticeboard, with photographs of children receiving weekly awards certificates, a weekly newsletter posted within the parents section, and regular updates about trips and other events within the Year Groups pages.

There is also a good amount of evergreen content, such as the the recommended reading list, and content I have written especially for the website, such as this piece on the Year 3 Family Dining Day,  when parents, aunties and grandparents came into school to have lunch with their children.

As well as creating the initial design, I manage the site for the school and am in regular contact with the school business secretary and office to ensure that it is always up to date.

Andrew came up with a brand new website for the school which we are absolutely thrilled with. It’s bright, colourful and really easy to navigate which we were very keen on.

Since then he has continued to update the site on a daily basis and many parents have commented on how much they like it and how useful it is. The staff are very pleased with the new design and its content too.

He also wrote and designed a great newsletter which was also very popular with staff and parents.

Andrew is really easy to deal with and I would have no hesitation in recommending him to other schools.

Diane Brown, Business Manager, Overchurch Junior School

The website for Overchurch Juniors is always my first stop when I need school information.

It is very pleasing on the eye and easy to use. I love the live feel it has.

I like the theme of the website and that it is always full of relevant and up to date information.

I regularly view the pages for years four and six as these apply to my children and the weekly update.
